Frozen in Flight

Description

It was as if this male turned to my camera and posed, knowing the light would hit the vibrant colours on his neck perfectly. This handsome fella was feasting on some fresh nectar yesterday afternoon. He stayed around for a good couple of minutes before leaving and disappearing into a nearby hedge. It was only moments later when a female came to enjoy the same feast. RTHs drink nectar about roughly every 10 to 15 minutes due to their high metabolism. They have extremely fast heartbeats and use up a lot of energy, so drinking often is a must. These tiny but mighty birds consume about half to twice their total body weight in nectar daily. For a tiny 3-to-5-gram bird, this equals to roughly 2 fluid ounces (60 ml) of nectar or sugar water each day.
