Appreciating beauty in the backyard, in the spirit of Photography for the Joy of It (Freeman Patterson)
With the business of everyday life I tend to put the camera away between grand trips to wild places. However photography is a skillful art that takes practice like an instrument, and I must admit I do get rusty when it's been a long time between expeditions.
The solution. A resolution to take one picture everyday that I am at home, over the next one year. The pictures will be primarily outside in the yard, or looking out, and I am going to use only one lens, a 105mm f/2.8 Macro. It is a beautiful lens yet it always gets sacrificed when I'm on photography trips, due to the necessity of making difficult exclusions to pare down the camera bag weight.
Here is a photos from this week. I can't seem to avoid the lure of the spring flower blossoms, much like the bumblebee pictured here. Looking through the viewfinder while moving the plane of focus and adjusting the depth of field by aperture, the scene is magical, like directing your own movie in real time. The joy of photography rises again, without any purpose but to simply connect with nature.
As I was concentrating on this garden subject when a red squirrel who was chastising me drew the ire of a nearby pair of nesting robins. They swept past my head in pursuit of the squirrel in a voiceless flutter of wings in branches. Startled by this action, my heel was brushed by the clumsy blur of three young rabbits chasing each other through our yard as I watched the squirrel trying to out maneuver the robins. I wouldn't have experienced any of this, had I not stepped outside to take my daily photograph.
