Description
One of my favorite woodpeckers seen in Eastern Ontario is this, the Red-bellied Woodpecker. The name is somewhat counter-intuitive because of its obvious red head, it does have red colouring on its belly. Red-headed woodpeckers have quite brilliantly red coloured heads and the difference between the two is quite distinct. More and more of this species are reported in Eastern Ontario, and I have personally seen many more this year than in previous years!
